How Evaporative Coolers Work
An evaporative cooler pulls hot outdoor air through water-saturated pads. As the air passes through, water evaporates and absorbs heat, dropping the air temperature by 15–30°F before delivering it into your home. They use a fraction of the electricity of central AC — typically 75% less — and require open windows to allow airflow through the home.
When Evaporative Cooling Works Well in Arizona
Evaporative cooling works on a simple principle: the drier the air, the better it cools. In Arizona's climate, this means evaporative coolers perform well during:
- Spring months (March–May) when humidity is very low and temperatures are moderate
- Dry summer days (June through early July) when humidity is still low
- Areas of Arizona with consistently low humidity, particularly at higher elevations
When Evaporative Cooling Fails in Arizona
