Capacitor vs. Compressor Failure in Your Arizona AC — Know the Difference
When your air conditioner stops working in Phoenix, Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert, or anywhere in the Phoenix metro area, one of the most important questions is: is this a capacitor or a compressor? The difference matters enormously — a capacitor replacement costs $150–$350 and takes under an hour. A compressor failure means either a $1,500–$2,800 compressor replacement or, more often on an aging Arizona system, full system replacement.
What Is a Capacitor and What Does It Do?
A capacitor is a small cylindrical electrical component located inside your outdoor condenser unit. It serves two critical functions:
- Start capacitor function: Provides the high-voltage jolt needed to start the compressor and fan motors
- Run capacitor function: Maintains the voltage needed to keep the motors running efficiently
In Arizona's extreme heat, capacitors degrade faster than anywhere else in the country. Most Arizona AC capacitors last 5–10 years — compared to 15–20 years in cooler climates. Failed or failing capacitors are the single most common HVAC repair call we make throughout the Phoenix metro area.
What Is a Compressor and What Does It Do?
The compressor is the heart of your air conditioning system — a large motor-driven pump that compresses refrigerant and circulates it to move heat from inside your home to outside. A compressor replacement costs $1,500–$2,800 in parts and labor; on systems over 8–10 years old, full system replacement is usually more cost-effective.

Signs of a Failed or Failing Capacitor
- Outdoor unit hums loudly but the fan and/or compressor don't start or spin
- AC takes longer than normal to start cooling after the thermostat calls for it
- System shuts off shortly after starting
- System cools less effectively than before
- You may hear a single "click" followed by a hum — the start attempt failing
Signs of a Failed Compressor
- Outdoor unit attempts to start, draws very high current, and immediately trips the circuit breaker
- Outdoor fan runs normally but there is no cooling
- Grinding, clanking, or screeching from inside the outdoor unit
- Compressor runs but system produces warm air despite normal refrigerant levels
- New capacitor was just installed and the system still doesn't work
The Diagnostic Danger — Misdiagnosis by Untrained Technicians
Some less experienced technicians diagnose compressor failure too quickly when the actual problem is a failed capacitor. A dead capacitor prevents the compressor from starting — which can look exactly like compressor failure to an untrained eye. A proper diagnosis always tests the capacitor first. If your technician immediately jumps to "your compressor is dead" without testing the capacitor, ask them to test it before accepting that diagnosis.
When Compressor Replacement vs. System Replacement Makes Sense
- System under 8 years old, R-410A refrigerant: Compressor replacement may be warranted
- System 8–12 years old: Evaluate carefully — compressor cost plus other aging components may make system replacement the smarter decision
- System over 12 years old: Full system replacement is almost always the right answer
- System uses R-22 refrigerant: Replace the whole system — don't invest in an obsolete refrigerant system
