Short answer: Daikin. If you plan to install two or three mini splits in your house and you want a system that runs past the ten year mark with parts you can find at a local supply house, Daikin is the brand we install in our own homes and recommend first. Mitsubishi is the other premium option worth a look. Budget brands can work in a garage or shed, but a whole home deserves better.
This question comes up all the time on Reddit and in our estimate calls. A homeowner wants to add three mini splits, does not want one dying a year in, and wants parts that a technician can source without a three week wait. Here is the full breakdown from a crew that installs mini splits every week.
Why Daikin Wins on Reliability
Daikin is the largest HVAC manufacturer in the world. That scale matters for two reasons.
First, the engineering. Daikin builds its own inverter compressors, the heart of every mini split. Compressor failure is what kills cheap units. Daikin's swing and scroll compressors have failure rates that budget importers cannot touch, and the company backs that up with a 12 year parts and 12 year compressor warranty when the system is registered and installed by an authorized dealer.
Second, the support network. Daikin manufactures in North America and runs one of the largest parts distribution networks in the country. When a board or sensor needs replacement in year eight, your tech orders it and installs it the same week. Compare that to an off brand unit where the "warranty" requires you to ship parts from an overseas seller who may not exist anymore.

The "Breaks a Year In" Problem Is Usually Not the Brand
Here is the part most Reddit threads miss. When a mini split fails in the first year, the install caused it more often than the equipment did.
The most common first year failures we get called to fix on other companies' installs:
- Refrigerant leaks at the flare connections. Bad flares are the number one killer. The system loses charge over months, then the compressor runs hot and dies.
- No vacuum pulled on the line set. Moisture in the lines turns to acid and eats the compressor from the inside.
- Wrong line set length or missing charge adjustment. Every foot of line set changes the required charge.
- Undersized or oversized units. An oversized head short cycles and never dehumidifies. Our mini split sizing guide covers how to get this right.
Buy a great brand and pair it with a licensed installer who pulls a proper vacuum and pressure tests the lines. That combination is what gets you 15+ years. Read about the Sapper Standard installation process to see what a correct install includes.

Book Free EstimateInstant QuoteThree Single Zones or One Multi Zone System?
If you are adding three mini splits, you have two paths:
Three separate single zone systems. Three outdoor condensers, three indoor heads. Costs more up front and takes more wall space outside, but each room runs independent. One unit failing never takes out the others. This is our default recommendation when the outdoor space allows it.
One multi zone system. One larger outdoor condenser feeding three indoor heads. Cleaner look outside and often cheaper to install. The trade off: if the condenser goes down, all three rooms lose cooling, and multi zone systems modulate less at low loads.
Daikin builds strong options for both. The Aurora line handles cold climates down to minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit at full rated capacity, which matters if you are in a place with real winters. The Atmosphera line pushes efficiency to 27.4 SEER2 for hot climates. Browse the full lineup on our Daikin mini splits page.
What About Mitsubishi, MRCOOL, Della, and the Budget Brands?
Mitsubishi is the other tier one brand. Excellent equipment, excellent parts network, priced a bit above Daikin in most markets. We put the two head to head in our Daikin vs Mitsubishi comparison.
MRCOOL and other DIY brands exist for homeowners who want to self install. The equipment is decent but the pre charged line sets limit placement, and most HVAC companies will not service a DIY install.
Della, Aurus, TCL, Everwell and similar budget brands cost half the price for a reason. We install them on request for garages and workshops where a failure is an inconvenience, not an emergency. For the rooms your family sleeps in, spend up. Parts availability is the difference between a two day repair and a dead unit you replace outright.
What Do Three Mini Splits Cost?
For quality equipment installed by a licensed contractor, plan on a range of $3,500 to $5,500 per zone depending on head type, line set runs, and electrical work. Multi zone setups often land lower per zone. Our mini split cost page breaks down real pricing, and financing options can spread the project out. If you are in Arizona, check current utility rebates before you buy since heat pump incentives can knock serious money off a three zone project.
The Bottom Line
Pick Daikin or Mitsubishi for a multi zone home. Register the warranty. Hire an authorized dealer who pulls a vacuum, pressure tests, and sizes each head with a load calculation instead of a guess. Do those three things and "will this break a year in" stops being a question you need to ask.
