What a Capacitor Does and Why It Matters

Think of a capacitor as the battery-like component that starts and keeps your AC motors running. Your air conditioning system has two main motors that need capacitor support: the compressor motor and the condenser fan motor. When a capacitor fails completely, the motor it supports doesn't start at all, starts but draws excessive current and overheats, or the system short-cycles. In Arizona's summer heat, a capacitor failure means no cooling within minutes.

Capacitors are rated to operate up to a maximum temperature — typically 70°C (158°F) for standard residential AC capacitors. A capacitor in a Minneapolis home might cycle on and off 1,500 times in a cooling season. A capacitor in a Phoenix home might cycle 8,000–12,000 times. Each start cycle stresses the capacitor. More cycles in extreme heat equals dramatically accelerated degradation.

Voltage Stress

When a compressor is struggling — due to dirty condenser coils, low refrigerant, or a worn motor — it draws higher starting current. This puts additional voltage stress on the capacitor during every start attempt.

How to Prevent Capacitor Failure in Arizona

Annual Capacitor Testing

Keep Condenser Coils Clean

Dirty condenser coils make your compressor work harder, draw more current, and stress the capacitor on every start. Annual coil cleaning reduces the electrical stress that accelerates capacitor wear.

Consider Upgraded Capacitors

Standard residential capacitors are rated to 70°C. Higher-rated capacitors (85°C or "Titan" series) are available for Arizona applications and have longer service lives in extreme heat environments.

Ensure Adequate Airflow Around the Outdoor Unit

An outdoor unit with restricted clearance traps heat in the equipment bay, raising the ambient temperature around the capacitor. Maintain at least 18–24 inches of clearance on all sides.
