Why Is My AC Freezing Up in Phoenix AZ? Causes and Fixes
It seems counterintuitive — your air conditioner is freezing up in the middle of an Arizona summer. But a frozen AC coil is one of the most common HVAC problems we see throughout Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe, and the entire Phoenix metro area. Here's why it happens and exactly what to do.
What Does "AC Freezing Up" Mean?
When your AC "freezes up," ice forms on the evaporator coil — the indoor component inside your air handler that absorbs heat from your home's air. When this coil is covered in ice, air can no longer flow through it effectively, and your system stops cooling your home despite running continuously.
Why Does This Happen in Arizona?
Evaporator coil freezing happens when the coil gets too cold — below 32°F — and moisture in the air passing over it freezes on contact. This happens when either airflow across the coil is restricted or the refrigerant pressure in the coil drops too low.
1. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter (Most Common Cause in Arizona)
Arizona's dust demands filter changes every 30–45 days. A severely clogged filter restricts airflow so dramatically that the evaporator coil doesn't receive enough warm air to prevent freezing. This is the number-one cause of frozen coils in Phoenix metro homes.
The fix: Turn the system to "fan only" mode (no cooling) to thaw the coil — this takes 2–4 hours. Then replace the filter and restart the system in cooling mode.
2. Low Refrigerant (Refrigerant Leak)
Low refrigerant causes the pressure in the evaporator coil to drop, which causes the refrigerant temperature to drop well below freezing. This is the second most common cause of frozen coils we see in Chandler, Mesa, and Gilbert homes.
The fix: This requires a licensed technician. We find and repair the refrigerant leak, then recharge the system to factory specifications.
3. Blocked or Closed Vents
If several supply or return air vents in your home are closed or blocked by furniture, the system can't move enough air across the evaporator coil, causing it to freeze.
The fix: Check every vent in your home. Make sure all supply and return registers are fully open and unobstructed. Thaw the coil with fan-only mode, then restart.
4. Dirty Evaporator Coil
Over time, dust can coat the evaporator coil and restrict airflow. A dirty coil insulates itself from the warm air it needs to prevent freezing.
The fix: Professional evaporator coil cleaning — part of a thorough annual tune-up.
5. Failing Blower Motor
If your indoor blower motor is running slower than normal, it can't move enough air across the evaporator coil to prevent freezing.
The fix: Blower motor inspection, capacitor replacement, or full blower motor replacement as needed.
What to Do Right Now If Your AC Is Frozen
- Turn the thermostat to "fan only" mode — this circulates air without running the compressor and allows the ice to thaw
- Do NOT turn the system off completely — the fan needs to run to thaw the coil
- Place towels around the base of your air handler — thawing ice produces water that can overflow the drain pan
- Wait 2–4 hours for the ice to fully thaw
- Replace your air filter while waiting
- Restart in cooling mode — if it freezes again within a few hours, there's an underlying problem that requires a technician
