Possible causes

Safe checks before calling
- If you hear grinding, metal-on-metal, or repeated breaker trips, shut the system off
- Note whether the noise comes from the indoor or outdoor unit
- Check for obvious loose exterior panels without opening equipment
- Do not reach into a running fan or remove electrical covers
